Build Strength

While you should also be including strength training during a race cycle, your focus is mainly on running.  Lift too much and you'll be too sore to run well.

During the off season, you can reach a level of strength that's just not possible (or advisable) during long distance race training.

Sharpen Your Speed

Working on near-max speed should be a very small part of marathon or half marathon training.  Your focus is mainly stamina (speed + endurance).

Now is the time to develop your raw speed with more VO2 max training and amplify your power with higher intensity interval training.

The reason there are very few marathons or half marathons to train for right now is the weather.  It's just too cold, hot, snowy, rainy, or dark for good racing.
