Even to this day, most scientific studies either intentionally or unintentionally exclude women.
Females are difficult to study because we have periods, fluctuating hormones, and babies. So we’re left to take the advice that works for males and assume that we’re close enough.
The reality is, we’re far from it.
There are plenty of systemic societal, political, and traditional reasons that females are not studied in the same way as males and it can get frustrating if you let it get to you.
But there is hope.
Welcome to the Planted Runner. I’m Coach Claire Bartholic and my mission is to help you improve your running, your mindset, and your life with science-backed training and plant-based nutrition.
My guest today is journalist Christine Yu.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Why women have been traditionally excluded from scientific research on athletes
- Why that matters in the first place, and
- How new research specifically on the female athlete can transform the way you train, fuel, and recover.
Christine Yu is an award-winning journalist whose work focuses on the intersection of sports science and women athletes. Her writing has appeared in Outside, The Washington Post, Runner’s World, and other publications.
Her new book, Up To Speed, explores the myths and gender biases of scientific research today, and empowers people to excel in sport regardless of sex or gender. It’s a fascinating read for anyone who considers themselves a student of sport.
Don’t forget to stay tuned all the way to the end for another Mental Strength Minute. Fortify your mind in 60 seconds or less.
I have helped hundreds of real runners chase their dreams and conquer what they never thought possible. My coaching philosophy combines science-based training, plant-based running nutrition, and proven mindset techniques to unlock every runner's true potential.
I’m a certified vegan running coach, sports nutrition specialist, mom, and borderline obsessive plant lover.
As an athlete, I went from a 4:02 first marathon all the way to a 2:58 finishing time at the age of 42, entirely plant-based.
I coach vegan, plant-based, and plant-curious runners to achieve the same dramatic success, from those on a walk-run program, general fitness, up to high-level athletes.
My book, The Planted Runner: Running Your Best with Plant-Based Nutrition is available now at https://www.theplantedrunner.com/book or wherever books are sold). I include everything you need to become a better runner all in one place, fueled by plants.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Every runner will benefit from this podcast
“I’ve been active in fitness for 30 years and running for 13 years. I’ve been following and listening to Claire for several months. Mental strength minute is my favorite part of each episode. Todays topic in muscle soreness was just for me 😉. As a trainer and coach I know better, but still catch myself judging the effectiveness of what I did on how sore I am. One day I’ll be perfect at it. For now I’ll keep soaking up knowledge from other amazing coaches. Thank you Claire!”
